John Muir Biographical Timeline!!

1838- Born: Dunbar, Scotland
April 21 (Day before Earth Day, whaaaat?!)
1849- Emigrated to Wisconsin (Age 11)
1860- Attended University of Wisconsin
Studied geology and botany
1867- Moved to Indiana, got a job as a carriage mechanic
Quit job, after accident that temporarily blinded him-
Walked to Gulf of Mexico- Begins journaling (I see a future in Nature
writing don’t you?)
1868- Arrives in California
Journeys to Yosemite (OH HEY SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL MOMENT!!)
1870’s- Studies the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite Valley, explores, falls in love with
it, etc.
1880- Married Louie Wanda Strentzel (Oh sad day for me!), begins managing her
father’s fruit ranch.
1881- First daughter (SHOOT, no male descendant) Wanda is born.
1886- Second daughter (DOUBLE SHOOT!) Helen is born.
1890’s through 1914- writes, works and becomes involved in the politics of
preservation. Fights against the damming of Hetch-Hetchy valley
1914- Dies in Los Angeles California, December 24 (Christmas Eve will never be the
same again…)
